For the horse who has everything, or maybe the horse lover who has everything, we give you a rustic, one-of-a-kind grooming/tack box-themed storage box with matching table.  These items were hand crafted from rough and rustic boards of quartersawn sycamore.  We made the grooming box some time ago and love it, but decided it needed elevation for ideal use and so we made the matching table.  The pair together could serve as an actual tack box and stand, or, it could serve as a ‘horse themed’ storage unit for inside the home.  We keep this set in a hallway alcove as it is capable of storing a wide variety of items.  

 

The components of the tack box were crafted from 3/4" boards and biscuit joined for extra strength, and butt-jointed together for a pragmatic, utilitarian look in keeping with the purpose of the item.  The front door lowers and the lid raises to reveal a versatile interior.  A bottom compartment holds larger items, while above that the side walls have two sets of rails that support a removable shelf and a portable tote.  The spacing is such that these parts may be interchanged on the rails or stacked one atop the other.  The portable tote has a turned handle of black walnut that compliments the grain of the sycamore, and the tack box features cast iron side handles, hinges and hasp.  The matching table was also created from quartersawn sycamore— 1” boards for the tabletop, apron and I-beam support, with chunky 2x3” thick legs for extra strength.  The table is assembled with biscuits and assorted pocket hole and other wood screws, and the apron corners support rustic cast iron braces for extra support and a nice decorative touch.

 

The wood was finished with a three-stage hand rubbed process that included Danish Oil, a gel based urethane wood stain, and an oil and urethane satin finish.  This combination truly enhances the incredible grain patterns found in this species of quartersawn wood and also contributes to the rustic look we were striving for.

 

These items are large and hefty and thus for LOCAL PICK-UP only.  The tack box is 24" wide x 26" tall x 15" deep.  The table is 26” wide x 19” tall x 17” deep.  The total unit height is 45”, ideal for all kinds of uses.
