This little box is another made of a glued stack of wood. This time, we started with a leftover portion of a hard maple slab. We cut the slab into sections and glued it up, cutting in a basic oval shape to begin with. The original box design did not succeed and we were left with the plug that had formed the interior, plus a slice of maple that was intended to be the top of the original box. Undaunted, we still wanted to make something from this interesting stack of wood, so we cut and glued another box design, this time achieving a satisfactory result. Because this box is smaller than the one originally intended, the piece that was to be the lid offered considerable overhang not usually available on a bandsaw box. That is when we got the idea to take advantage of the situation by crafting the lid into the form of a maple leaf, to keep with the maple theme of the box. The lid design was sketched out and then rough cut on a bandsaw, giving the whole project a natural folk art feel. The finish is a combination of natural Danish oil and clear shellac. This little box measures 3 1/2” tall x 3 1/2” wide x 4 1/2” long. The lid measures quite a bit larger, at 7” wide and 6 1/2” long.
