Koa Slant Lamp #2

This lamp came about because we had a wonderful but highly ‘irregular’ slab of Hawaiian Koa. Nice and flat on one side, it was driftwood-like on the opposite, and of irregular thickness, such that flattening of the rounded side would have made the entire piece too thin to work with. So, instead of trying to create a standard, vertical slab lamp, we angled one end of this piece to sit beautifully on another slab of Koa that serves as the base. To enhance the look of the angle, we created coordinating angles on the top of the slab, giving it a slightly off-kilter look, and also undercut the slab base on all sides. We joined the two slabs with a biscuit, and of course drilled through them to create an opening for the steel pole, which also provides extra support.

We then cut, threaded and painted the steel pole in our usual fashion (“hammered” style paint for a lightly textured look), and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed oil based finish, this time in a high gloss. We usually go in for a satin finish, but the reddish tones of these particular pieces of Koa cried out for a glossy finish, and we really love it.

At first we were going to design our own shade for this lamp, but then we discovered that we already had this wonderful oval shaped shade that was the perfect size, so we went with that. You can buy this lamp with or without this shade, which is the “uno” style that this lamp is designed to take. If you want to buy it without the shade, there will be a proper discount in the price, plus a little less in shipping (the shade, if you include it in the purchase, must be shipped in a separate box to prevent the heavy base from damaging it.)

This lamp measures 24 inches tall by 13 inches wide (at the base) by 7 inches deep and includes an 8 foot long cord and cool ‘Edison’ / vintage style LED bulb.
